Armley and Wortley Tennis Club was originally situated on Armley Ridge Road near the railway station and it became the first club in the Yorkshire lawn tennis association.
In 1923 the tennis club was offered the land at their present location by the council and subsequently Upper Armley Tennis Club was formed. The club then consisted of two shale courts and two grass courts.
In the 1950’s the shale courts were converted to tarmac hard surface and the area where the grass courts were situated was sold back to the council to pay for the resurfacing.
In 1963/64 the indoor court was built and with increased revenue, the club managed to buy back the land from the council.
Although the outside courts have been retarmaced on a few occasions, the indoor court had never been resurfaced until 2008.
The clubhouse or pavilion was originally built in 1924 and was used as army barracks. It is structurally very sound and in 2008 was completely refurbished.
All the works done in 2008 were the result of selling land that the club owned on Stanningley Road which has now been converted into flats.
